Principia softball takes down St. Louis College of Pharmacy

ELSAH, ILL. --

Game 1:               Principia - 7                                         St. Louis School of Pharmacy – 6

What an exciting game this was.  Some good back and forth scoring that ended up forcing the game into an extra inning.  Early on Principia was playing well and in control of things with a 2-1 lead but then a couple of errors let SLCOP have a big inning and take a 5-2 lead.   Principia answered with a 4 run inning of their own and took a 6-5 lead into the top of the 7th.  SLCOP worked hard to score the tying run and Principia wasn't able to put the game away in the bottom of the 7th.  In the 8th with a runner automatically at 2nd base to start the inning (International Tie Breaker Rule) Prin played some great defense and held SLCOP off the score board.  In their half of the 8th Principia managed to score their runner from 2nd to end the game.
Offensively, Christine Nacewicz had an awesome game going 4 for 5 including a triple and accounting for 4 RBI's including the game winner.  Tori Cheatham also had a multiple hit game foing 2 for 4.  Kelsey Whitney, Ashley Shoemake and Genevieve Smith all had one hit.  Jessy MacMullin did her job as the lead- off hitter scoring 3 runs.

Game 2:               Principia – 8                                        St. Louis School of Pharmacy – 2

This was a nice solid effort on Principia's part.  They played solid defense and were able to work themselves out of some innings that could have been trouble.  They certainly showed good poise numerous times during this game not allowing SLCOP to have a big inning.  Some of the newer players to the game, Genevieve Smith and Chelsea Chichester both made some strong defensive plays that exemplified their ongoing improvements.

Casey Lee had a great day on the mound!  She pitched both ends of this double header and looked as strong in the 7th inning of game 2 as she did in the 1st inning of game 1.  Her screw ball was menacing all day to the right handed hitters of SLCOP as she worked the ball in on their hands on a cold day.  The few times her defense struggled she came through with some great pitches and solid fielding of her own to put out the fire.

The offense showed good patience at the plate in this game as the SLCOP pitcher did have some control problems from time to time.  They forced her to throw strikes and as a result were able to earn a number of base on balls.  Both Jessy MacMullin and Christine Nacewicz earned 3 base on balls each.  Chelsea Chichester had a 2 hit game with a sacrifice bunt and an RBI.  Getting hits were Kelsey Whitney, Tori Cheatham.  And just in case you were wondering, yes, Kelsey Whitney did get hit by another pitch in this game!
