The Panthers dropped two games to Westminster College Blue Jays 9-1 and 9-2 in a conference double header. In game one the Panthers faced one of the top pitchers in conference Deion Hughes. The Panthers scored first taking a 1-0 led.
Christian Thomas hit a double and then
Gavin Thomas drove him in. Senior starter Luke Ball got the start for the Panthers only giving up one run over the first four innings. Heading into the 5
th inning with the score tied 1-1 the Blue Jays plated four runs to take a 5-1 lead. The Panthers went to the bullpen in the 6
th inning as
Dallen Russell relived Luke Ball and
Parker Tibbetts came in to record the last two outs. The Blue Jays extended the lead adding on 4 runs in the 6
th to take a commanding 9-1 lead.
Offensively the Panthers only managed four hits.
Christian Thomas,
Ed Bargmann,
Dallen Russell, and
Scott Ross each contributed a hit.
Scott Ross and
Christian Thomas each had a double. The Panthers played solid defense, but could muster enough offense.
In game two freshmen
Sawyer Grow got the start on the bump and pitched a solid game. Sawyer has given the Panther multiple quality starts and when 7 innings, allowing only four earned runs, and striking out 4. Again the Panthers scored first plating a single run in the 2
nd inning.
Scott Ross smashed a double and
Dallen Russell followed with a single.
Bryce Murray hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the first run of the game. The lead was short lived as the Blue Jays responded with three runs in the 2
nd to take a 3-1 lead. Sawyer held the Blue Jays at bay over the next two innings, but the Blue Jays hit a two run home run in the 5
th to extend the lead to 5-1.
In the top of the 6
th the Panthers scored their second run as
Connor Coyne reached on an error.
Christian Thomas reached on a base hit bunt and then
Gavin Thomas ripped a double down the third base line to score the 2
nd run of the game. Westminster answered back scoring a run in the 6
th inning and led 6-2.
In the 8
th inning freshman
Hunter Mehring relieved Sawyer. Hunter pitched one inning and gave up three runs as the Blue Jays extended the lead to 9-2. The Panthers offensive had 7 hits in game two.
Dallen Russell led the team with a 2 for 4 effort with a double.
Gavin Thomas and
Scott Ross each had a double.
Christian Thomas,
Logan McDowell, and
Connor Coyne each had a single. Although the Panthers offense looked better in game two the team was unable to drive in runs when in scoring position. The Panthers had multiple chances early in the game.
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday April 15
th as they take on the third ranked Webster University Gorloks' in a single 9 inning game. First pitch is at 5:30pm.
