Panther baseball falls short swept by Spalding University

The Panthers continued to play Spalding University Eagles tough with a 3-1 loss in extra innings in game one of the double header and dropped the second game 11-2.
In game one senior Luke Ball got the start and pitched a complete game in the 3-1 loss. Luke pitched a solid game scattering 9 hits and only allowing one earned run. The Eagles struck first with one unearned run in the first inning. The Panthers answered in the second inning when freshman Bryce Murray double in Hunter Mehring to knot the score at 1-1. Both pitchers settled in the pitched scoreless innings over the next five innings.

The Panthers had opportunities, but were unable to capitalize. Freshman Hunter Mehring led off the 7th inning with a single and junior Christian Thomas followed with a single. The Panthers were unable to execute a bunt and the Eagles pitcher was able to work out of the jam. In the 8th inning the Eagles were able to push across two runs to take the lead in extra innings. The Panthers were unable to start a rally and fell to the Eagles 3-1. Offensively the Panthers were led by senior Scott Ross who ended up 2 for 3 and freshman Hunter Mehring who also finished 2 for 3. Freshman Bryce Murray drove in the Panthers only run and Ed Bargmann and Christian Thomas each finished with 1 hit. It was a good game and the Panthers came up just short.

In game two freshmen Sawyer Grow and pitched three strong innings. The Panthers struck first with runs in both the 1st and 4th innings. The Panthers held on to a 2-0 lead, but the Eagles were able to score 11 runs over the next three innings. Sophomore Tyler Nichoson, freshman Jemlok Farson, and Parker Tibbetts all pitched in relief.
Offensively the Panthers could only two hits one by Ed Bargmann and Christian Thomas. The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday April 8th when they take on Webster University in Sauget, Illinois at GCS ballpark. First pitch is set for 5pm.
