Box Score ELSAH, ILL. - This afternoon the Principia Panthers hosted the Eureka Red Devils for their conference opening match. What started out as a slow moving game for Principia ended in an 11-0 victory. In the first half, though there were moments of good build-ups and three goals scored by freshman
Tanya Marquardt, junior Gabby Martin, and junior
Justine Roy, the team's overall play was lacking in effort and good technical execution.
As the second half started it was evident Principia was willing to put forth the necessary effort needed to play good soccer and did it. Defenders were making overlapping runs into their attacking third and getting off good crosses. Center midfielders were finding the right opportunities to play through balls to on-running forwards, and the Panthers were scoring! In the second half, freshman
Emelie Fredrikson scored twice, Martin put another in the back of the net, junior
Georgia Mae Hurley scored her first of the season, Marquardt finished another, and all three freshman
Emma Dixon, sophomore
Claire Horton and freshman Alex Weitman scored their first collegiate goals.
In the last minute of play the Red Devils had a chance to score when a ball was placed over the Panther's backline and a Eureka forward rushed into the Panther's 18. Junior goal keeper
Kara Johnson came away big with an aggressive sliding save at the feet of the forward. Between sophomore keeper
Genevieve Smith (first half) and Johnson (second half), the two earned a shared shut out, first of the season.
The Panthers play their next game this coming Saturday at home against MacMurray at 1:00 pm.
