La Mirada, CA - The Principia men's tennis team took the court today to take on Biola University in their second match of spring break. Biola, an NAIA institution, provided a stiff test for this Panther squad. Despite competing well, the Panthers came up short, falling 7-2 to Biola University.
At 1st doubles,
Joey Sander and
Nate Waters fell behind quickly 2-0, but found their game and played some of their best doubles of the year. Sander and Waters refused to make mistakes and quickly pounced on the mistakes of their opponents, reeling off the final eight games and coming away with a 8-2 victory. At 2nd doubles
Jason Wissman and
Daniel Drake were unable to find their rhythm, falling 8-2. At 3rd doubles,
Andrew Rohrer and
Nicholas Flanders played solid tennis, but lost some tough games on serve and were unable to convert on their break chances. They fell 8-2.
Strong play for the Panthers came at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd singles. At 1st singles,
Jason Wissman fell behind early in his match, but found his groove in the middle of the first set. Wissman battled and eventually took the first set in a tiebreaker. Unfortunately, Wissman could not close out his tough opponent. He played very well, but fell 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2. At 2nd singles,
Joey Sander played a grueling match. Sander fought back after losing the first set, taking the second set and evening the match. Sander played extremely well, earning a match point, but was unable to close out his opponent. He lost a heartbreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6). Principia's lone singles win came from
Nate Waters at 3rd singles. Waters played a great first set, going up a break and never relinquishing his lead. In the second set, Waters fell behind 1-4, but dug deep and refused to lose the match. He won the final five games of the match, winning 6-4, 6-4.
The Panthers next match is on Friday, March 13th at Hope International University. Principia will be looking to end their spring break trip with a win.
