Baseball starts conference season with a 1-1 split in double header vs. Iowa Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Auburndale, FL - The Principia Panthers squared off against the Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan College in game one of their conference-opening series. They split the two games; Principia took the first game, 2-1, and Iowa Wesleyan stole the second by a score of 2-0. Both games featured very good pitching and solid defense.  Dallen Russell got the start for the Panthers in the first game and hurled a gem. Russell tossed six of the seven innings, surrendering just three hits and one run. He fanned five batters as well.  Ed Bargmann remained hot at the dish, collecting two base knocks. Parker Davidson also extended his hit streak to four games, going 2-2 at the plate. Hunter Mehring made clutch, timely adjustments at the plate in his second at bat which enabled him to drive in what turned out to be the two winning runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Gavin Thomas also picked up a hit in the victory.

Game two also came down to the wire. Unfortunately Principia was on the losing end of the latter game. Sawyer Grow was the starting pitcher and he threw brilliantly, lasting seven innings and allowing two runs, but just one earned run. Aleq McMullin came in and did not allow a run in the last two innings of the game.  The Panthers struggled offensively in game two, as they were unable to manufacture any runs. They had several opportunities to put some runs on the board but did not execute in those situations. Ed Bargmann played a phenomenal game in centerfield, making two outstanding diving plays in the right-center gap. He also singled in the eighth inning which elongated his hit-streak to five games. Gavin Thomas contributed with two base hits. Although the Panthers played well defensively and received stellar pitching performances from Grow and McMullin in the second game, it was not enough to earn the W.  The Panthers will continue working hard in practice this week as they look to build off of the progress they made in Florida this past week. Their next game is Friday, March 20th, at 6:00 p.m. at home versus the MacMurray College Highlanders.
