Baseball drops games 2 and 3 at MacMurray

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Saturday, March 21, 2015

JACKSONVILL, ILL. – In the first game of today's double-header, Gavin Thomas got the ball and threw very well. He went the distance, giving up five earned runs. It should be noted that several of these earned runs spurred from defensive miscues though. He pitched far better than the statistics would indicate as he kept the MacMurray hitters off balance most of the afternoon. The Panthers committed far too many errors and did not make plays that should have been made, which led to a few big innings for the Highlanders.

The Panthers scored one run in the top half of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly delivered by Logan McDowell which scored Dallen Russell. Russell hit a double and reached base safely in his other two at-bats. Christian Thomas also had a solid game at the plate, going two for three with a pair of singles. The Panthers were unable to string together consistent play throughout the game and as a result, lost 6-1.

Game 2 was a different story. Sawyer Grow got the start on the bump and did not get much support from his defense the first two innings, and gave up six runs (four earned) through those initial two innings. Grow found his stride in the third inning though and did not allow any runs after the second inning. He pitched six innings before handing the ball off to the bullpen.

The Highlanders trounced the Panthers in the last few innings of the game and ended up winning in eight innings by a score of 13-3. The Panthers played a sloppy game but showed flashes of promising play interspersed throughout the final game of the series.

The Panthers return to action Friday, March 27, against a scrappy Eureka Red Devils team. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Principia College.
