Men's tennis triumphs over Westminster College

Fulton, MO - Principia men's tennis traveled to Fulton, MO today to take on the Westminster College Blue Jays. The Panthers started fast and jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles. They carried this momentum into singles and were able to sweep all six singles spots. Principia defeated Westminster 9-0, moving their record to 5-5 and their SLIAC record to 3-0.


At 1st doubles, Nate Waters and Joey Sander started fast, jumping out to an early break of serve, but quickly were broken back. After each team had broken each other twice, the match was tied 5-5. Sander and Waters took over from there as they got the break to go up 6-5 and ran away with the final two games to take the 8-5 victory. At 2nd doubles, Jason Wissman and Daniel Drake started off on fire as the jumped out to a 6-1 lead. They were able to cruise through the final games, relying on their big serves to get them out of trouble. Wissman and Drake won 8-3. At 3rd doubles, Andrew Rohrer and Nick Flanders played flawlessly at the beginning of their match, going up two early breaks of serve. However, they soon found themselves in a battle as they were broken back twice. This match went to a tiebreaker where Rohrer and Flanders fell behind 2-5. Fortunately, they were able to quickly regroup and won the final five points of the match. They won 9-8 (5).


At 1st singles, Jason Wissman played his normal steady brand of tennis, focusing on ball placement and putting his opponent in tough spots. Wissman executed well throughout, winning 6-0, 6-0. At 2nd singles, Joey Sander dropped the first game of his match, but quickly found his rhythm. He hit a number of great volleys along with a number of passing shots. Sander won 6-1, 6-1. At 3rd singles, Nate Waters was able to keep his opponent off balance with his blend of offensive and counter punching tennis. Waters played well and orchestrated many solid points in his match. Waters won 6-0, 6-1.


At 4th singles, Daniel Drake played some of the best tennis he has played in dual match play this year. Drake was sharp in all facets of his game, controlling many of the points with his groundstrokes. Drake put consistent pressure on his opponent by controlling the ball extremely well all day long. Drake came away with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. At 5th singles, Andrew Rohrer played a grueling match. Rohrer was consistent all day long. He played many points that exceeded twenty shots and was able to use his fitness to tire out his opponent. For his hard work, Rohrer earned a 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory. At 6th singles, Nicholas Flanders played excellently all day long. His consistency along with his offensive abilities gave him an edge. Flanders was able to win 6-2, 7-6(2).


Principia next plays against Greenville in a battle of the top two teams in the SLIAC. This match is Senior Day for our 4 amazing seniors; Jason Wissman, Nate Waters, Andrew Rohrer, and Vernon West. Both teams are undefeated in conference, and the winner of this match will determine who gets the 1st seed for the SLIAC tournament. This match will be played at Morey Courts on Tuesday April, 14th at 5:00 PM! Come out and support these seniors for their fantastic contributions to the Principia Men's Tennis program!
