Principia drops final two games of season series with Greenville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELSAH, ILL. – On Saturday afternoon Principia could not find a way to evade being swept by Greenville College. Principia lost the second game of the series, 7-2, and the third game, 12-0.

Game 2

Gavin Thomas once again pitched the seven inning game of the series and did a nice job though he did not receive too much support from the defense behind him. He pitched a complete game and surrendered just five hits to a deep, well-balanced Greenville lineup. He walked four and also hit one batter. Thomas did a very nice job keeping the opposition off balance, and he struck out nine batters through seven innings.

Greenville scored runs in each of the first three innings. However, Thomas did not let any Greenville players advance past second base in any of the final four innings.

The Panthers were able to muster two runs in the sixth inning when Ed Bargmann and Christian Thomas each walked. Gavin Thomas lined a single up the middle which scored Bargmann. Two batters later, Logan McDowell drove in Christian Thomas to cut the Greenville lead to 7-2. Neither team scored in the seventh inning; consequently, Greenville went on to take the second game of the series, 7-2.
Game 3

Dallen Russell was the starting pitcher for Principia in the final game of the series. He, too, did not receive the strongest defensive effort behind him. He allowed six run (only two earned) in five innings of work. He gave up five hits, walked six batters, and struck out three.

Parker Tibbetts did an excellent job in relief, throwing two innings without allowing an earned run. He also struck out three. He had an impressive outing as he came in and threw strikes which is exactly what was asked of him.

Principia was held scoreless in all nine innings; they scattered four hits throughout the game. Hunter Mehring and Aleq McMullin each collected base knocks, and Parker Davidson had a pair of hits himself, including a double on a line drive to left field in the fifth inning.

It is extremely difficult to come back from large deficits suffered in the early innings, and the Panthers continued learning this lesson the hard way this series. In the first two innings alone in each game, the Panthers spotted Greenville 13 runs. Greenville scored seven first-inning runs in the three game series while Principia scored four runs total in the entire series to put things in perspective.

Principia will look to find their stride this week. Their next home game is Saturday, April 18, at 12:00 p.m. against the Webster Gorloks.
