Tale of Two Halves as Men’s Soccer loses to Monmouth College 2-1

Box Score Monmouth, IL. – Principia Men's soccer began their regular season on Tuesday against Monmouth College in a hard fought 2-1 loss. Battling the heat and humidity, both teams looked to possess the ball early and establish a solid rhythm of play. The breakthrough came early for Principia when senior Kevin Silcox (C) made a darting run between Monmouth's backline, while junior Laurencce Martins weighted the perfect pass into Silcox's feet. Kevin was left one on one with the opposing goalie and clinically finished what was a well-built, team goal.

After a solid opening 45 minutes, it was difficult for Principia to establish possession in the second half. Monmouth pressed with a barrage high pressure and tied the game late with a riveting back post shot from inside the box that slid by goalkeeper Ian Carlson's hands.

Minutes later, a defensive mistake led to a penalty kick for Monmouth with one minute remaining. The ball was placed home, and Principia finished the game with a bitter taste in their mouth.

Though the end result was unsatisfactory, the men have much good to build upon going forward this season. It is evident that this squad has the potential to make a great run this season, and the players look forward to putting in more work as the season progresses.
