Panthers led by Hathaway in close game vs. St. Mary's; ultimately falls 96-91

Box Score ELSAH, Ill. – Tonight Women's Basketball hosted the St. Mary of the Woods College Pomeroys at Hay Field House.  Having just come off of a tough loss to conference opponent Greenville College the night before, the Panthers were determined to bounce back and handle the Pomeroy pressure.  Led by freshman center Sophia Hathaway, Principia handled the SMWC full court press with composure and fluidity, as Hathaway threw several full court passes to streaking Panther guards for lay-ups.  Hathaway's favorite target for the evening was sophomore point guard Tanya Marquardt, who had 24 points as well as 9 assists of her own. But leading the Panthers in the assist category was sophomore shooting guard Megan Selby who had a career-high 10 assists. Unfortunately the Pomeroy's run and gun style of play kept the Panthers off-balance on defense at times, and their sophomore shooting guard Grace Ziegler was able to get open for several three point shots (she had 29 points for the game) that always gave St. Mary's a slight lead.  Going down by 14 points halfway through the 3rd quarter, the Panthers were able to bounce back and pull within 3 before a Ziegler dagger gave the Pomeroy's a 6 point lead that they would almost never relinquish.  The Panthers were anchored through the remainder of the game by the solid play of Hathaway and Marquardt as well as senior captain Kara Johnson (she contributed 23 points of her own) and junior forward Isabella Perea who grabbed some crucial rebounds down the stretch.

While the Panthers were ultimately unable to take the lead and secure the victory, the game represented a much improved effort from the night before, with three Panthers scoring 20 plus and the whole squad helping to handle the full court pressure.  Notable statistical contributions include Johnson with 23 and 13 boards, Marquardt with the aforementioned 24 points and 9 assists, and Hathaway with a career high double-double of 26 points and 24 rebounds.  She also logged 5 blocks.

The Panthers are back in action this coming Saturday, January 16th at Fontbonne University.  Game time is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
