Box Score ST. LOUIS, Miss. - Tonight the Principia College women's basketball team traveled to St. Louis, Mo. to take on conference opponent Webster University in their second match-up of the season. Off to a bit of a slow start, the Panthers got down early and as a result had to play catch-up for the rest of the game. Principia struggled a good deal under the pressure of the Gorloks high-intensity man defense, turning the ball over 13 times in the first half alone. Senior captain Kara Johnson and sophomore point guard Tanya Marquardt were able to help the Panthers find a semblance of an offense, but in the 2nd quarter Principia found themselves in a twenty point hole. This was due in large part to defensive lapses, as well as the Gorloks shooting a season best from behind the arc (they were 8-11 in the first half). However, the Panthers switched into zone with five minutes to go in the 2nd quarter and were able to cut the Webster lead back to 12 before heading into the locker room at half time down 45-33.
As has been the case in their past five games unfortunately, the Panther's poor play in the third quarter sealed their fate. Scoring just 7 points in the third, Principia saw the Gorlok lead grow again and despite some strong play on both ends from Johnson, Marquardt and junior forward Isabella Perea, the Panthers were unable to get back into the game. With a final score of 70-55, the Gorloks swept Principia for the season. Notable statistical contributions include Marquardt with 10 points, 5 boards, 3 assists and Johnson with a game high 17 points.
Principia is back in action at home this coming Saturday, January 30th versus conference opponent MacMurray College. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
