Spalding Takes Final Two Games from Principia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELSAH, ILL. – The Panthers finished their regular season series with the Golden Eagles today, dropping both games. Spalding played great baseball, while the Panthers came out flat and made too many errors in both games this afternoon.

Game 1

Aleq McMullin started on the mound for the Panthers in the first game. He pitched a scoreless first inning, and the Panthers were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, on Hunter Mehring's triple, which scored Jake Kearney. Kearney led the game off with a line drive single to center. The Panthers picked up two hits in the opening frame, but were held hitless and scoreless the rest of the contest.

Spalding scored 18 runs on nine hits. The Panthers gave up nine free bases and also had six errors in the game. The Panthers were unable to find their stride offensively or defensively (in both games). To give credit where credit is due, though, Spalding is a very talented, deep, well-coached team, and played great baseball this weekend.

Game 2

Hunter Mehring received the nod in the second game. He pitched well in spurts, but giving up (three walks) and (two) hit batsmen, along with several errors behind him, led to a rough outing. Parker Tibbetts threw well out of the pen, and Jake Kearney threw a scoreless inning in relief.

Spalding's Jimi Keating (RHP) was virtually unhittable today, as Parker Davidson was the only Panther to pick up a base hit in the ball game. Keating dealt quickly and got ahead early in the count, which makes a huge difference. The Panthers will look to get back on track and get ready for this next week of baseball, when they play five straight home games. The Panthers will be hosting Illinois College in a double-header Tuesday, and then will also be hosting Greenville College Friday evening and Fontbonne University in a double-header on Satruday.
