Panthers Take One of Two from Pioneers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Paragould, AR.  – The Principia Panthers voyaged to Paragould, Arkansas, on Friday, to play a double-header on Saturday, against the Crowley's Ridge Pioneers. The Panthers played solid ball all day, and split the two-game series with the Pioneers. The Panthers fell in game one, 1-0 (extra innings), but played great all-around baseball in game two, and were victorious, 8-4.

Game One

Sawyer Grow started on the mound for the Panthers in the first game. He turned in a stellar performance, going five innings, surrendering just three hits, while striking out three. He did not allow any runs.

Parker Tibbetts took the mound in the sixth inning and pitched very well, too. Tibbetts struck out two and allowed just two hits in his 2.0+ innings in relief. Unfortunately, he was credited with the loss, as the Pioneers scored (an unearned run) in the home half of the eighth inning.

The Panthers collected six hits in game one, but were unable to produce any runs. On the bright side, Jake Kearney found his stride at the plate, connecting for a pair of base hits. Parker Tibbetts remained hot at the plate, also contributing with two hits. Parker Davidson and Alex Stamos each knocked a base hit of their own.

A couple errors by the Panthers in the final frame proved to be costly, as the Pioneers pushed across the winning run in the eighth inning. However, the pitching staff did a remarkable job the entire game and worked at a great pace. The Panthers entered the second game determined to take full advantage of the opportunity they had.

Game Two

In game two, the Panthers came out firing on all cylinders. They finally woke the bats up from their extended hibernation, and tallied eight runs. The offense combined for 11 hits.

Connor Coyne led the offensive charge, with three hits, including a pair of doubles. Jake Kearney stayed hot, scorching a pair of base hits. Hunter Mehring tore the cover of the ball when he hit a double to right center in the third inning. David Giorlando made the most of his pinch hit appearance, drilling a double to right center in the fifth frame.

Parker Davidson reached base safely in half of his at-bats, including a line drive single to center. Aleq McMullin and Jeff Ross both had success at the plate in game two, as they each lined singles, and reached base safely in three of their at-bats. And finally, Zach Grennie hit a towering homerun in his final at-bat of the day, marking the first of his collegiate career, and the first of the season for the Panthers as a team.

Aleq McMullin was terrific on the mound for the Panthers. He gave the Panthers 6.2 quality innings. McMullin struck out six en route to his first victory. Alex Stamos entered in the final frame and recorded the last out of the game for the Panthers. Overall, the pitching staff did an incredible job in both games!

The Panthers look to carry the momentum into their Spring Break trip, where they will be playing six games in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Their next game is in Myrtle Beach, on Monday, March 14, at 6:00 p.m., against Alfred State College, a State University of New York. The Panthers first home game is set for Friday, March 25, at 7:00 vs. the Spalding Golden Eagles. Thanks for all the support!
