Box Score ELSAH, Ill. – The Greenville Panthers came to town for a single nine-inning game. Greenville and Principia both brought early offense, as each team scored in each of the first two innings. Good pitching and stagnant offense proved to be the story of innings three through eight. Ultimately though, it was the Panthers of Greenville that escaped with the victory, as they scored seven unanswered runs in the ninth inning and prevailed, 11-5.
Sawyer Grow received the start on the mound for Principia. After giving up four early runs in the first two innings, he found his groove and kept the Panthers off the scoreboard over the next four and two-thirds innings. Grow scattered eight hits over his 6.2 innings pitched and gave up four runs.
Parker Tibbetts entered in relief and recorded a fly ball out to right field on his very first pitch.
Alex Stamos then relieved Tibbetts, as he pitched the final two innings for the Panthers. He did a great job in the eighth, tossing a scoreless frame. However, a few defensive miscues and untimely errors were the story of the ninth inning.
Bryce Murray had another fantastic day behind the plate, and gunned out two runners attempting to steal second base.
Parker Davidson was the catalyst for the Panthers offensively, as he collected three hits on the evening, including a stand-up triple to the right center gap.
Connor Coyne and
Jeff Ross each had a pair of base knocks.
Zach Grennie belted his fourth homer of the year and was mere inches away from hitting another homerun, but Greenville's centerfielder, Mike Hardin, robbed Grennie as he scaled the wall and made a great catch.
Hunter Mehring and
Bryce Murray also picked up base hits.
The Panthers led 5-4 from the third inning through the eighth inning. However, Greenville's first two hitters in the final inning both reached on errors. The third batter of the inning dropped a well-placed bunt down the third base line, and an errant throw to first base enabled two runs to score, which put Greenville up by a run. A few more errors allowed the inning to extend, and as a result, Principia lost a heartbreaker, 11-5.
