Box Score 2 ELSAH, ILL. – The Fontbonne Griffins made the trip up to Principia College on Saturday. It was a very crisp, windy day in Elsah. The Panthers received great pitching performances in both games, but untimely errors ended up costing them, as they fell in both games. The Griffins took the first game, 4-3, and the second game, 6-3.
Game 1
Aleq McMullin started on the mound for the Panthers and turned in an outstanding performance. McMullin threw a complete game and only gave up three hard hit balls throughout his seven innings on the mound. McMullin only gave up two earned runs and struck out four in the game.
Zach Grennie smashed a triple over the head of the centerfielder in the second inning.
Bryce Murray then did the job and hit a SAC fly, which enabled Grennie to score.
Hunter Mehring hit a line drive double to the right centerfield wall in the sixth inning which scored
Parker Davidson.
Aleq McMullin also contributed with a double. Davidson and
Connor Coyne each had base hits for the Panthers.
The Panthers had a great opportunity in the final inning, as
Jeff Ross led off with a walk. They loaded the bases, but the Griffins were able to escape without any damage.
The Panthers made three errors, which proved to be costly. McMullin threw a gem though, and the Panthers hit the ball hard, when they made contact. However, they also struck out 13 times in the game.
Game 2
Hunter Mehring was the starting pitcher in game two. He also pitched extremely well and did not receive enough support from the defense behind him. Mehring threw six innings, allowing five hits and four runs. He struck out four along the way.
Parker Tibbetts threw the final three innings for the Panthers and did a nice job.
Offensively,
Connor Coyne and
Parker Davidson each had a pair of hits.
Hunter Mehring,
Bryce Murray, and
Jeff Ross were the other Panthers to record hits for the Panthers.
Unfortunately, a couple of late runs for the Griffins proved to be the difference in the game, as the Panthers fell, 6-3. They will look to get back on track Tuesday when they be travelling to Fulton, MO, to take on The Westminster Blue Jays in a two-game series.
