Box Score 2 FULTON, MO. – The Panthers travelled to Fulton, MO, this afternoon, to take on the Westminster Blue Jays in a two game series. The Blue Jays entered today's action at the top spot in the SLIAC. They had a 13-7 overall record, and had only dropped one conference game before the Panthers came to town. After falling in the first game, the Panthers swung the bats well in the second game and brought a lot of energy, and upset the number one team in the conference, 15-13.
Game 1
Alex Stamos received his first collegiate start on the mound. He dealt three innings before
Parker Davidson entered in relief. Davidson showed promise on the hill against Illinois College, where he struck out four in just two innings of work in the JV game. This marked Davidson's first collegiate appearance on the mound, and he did a stellar job. Davidson pitched three innings, struck out four batters, and did not allow an earned run.
Davidson also smacked an RBI triple to the right center gap in the fifth inning.
Jake Kearney had an RBI double in the fourth inning. And
Bryce Murray and
Hunter Mehring were the only other Panthers to record a hit in the first game. The Panthers ended up losing the first game, 17-4.
Game 2
Game two was a different story. The Panthers showed up to play in the second game and scored runs in six consecutive innings (second through seventh). They received contributions from everyone in the latter game.
David McClelland was the starting pitcher. He threw 4.1 innings and allowed three earned runs, before handing the ball over to
Parker Tibbetts. Tibbetts threw the next 3.2 innings, and
Aleq McMullin entered in the final inning and kept the Blue Jays off the scoreboard, while striking out two along the way.
Offensively, there were four Panthers with multi-hit games.
Hunter Mehring had a break-out game, as he connected for two homeruns. The first was a solo shot to left center. His second of the day was a grand slam blast to left center.
Zach Grennie also had a grand slam of his own.
Jake Kearney,
Bryce Murray, and
Jeff Ross all had multi-hit games.
Jake Kearney delivered his first career homerun to left center, and
Jeff Ross and
Aleq McMullin both had doubles.
Hunter Mehring had 5 RBI,
Zach Grennie had 4 RBI, and
Jeff Ross had 2 RBI. The Panthers only struck out four times in the game and were hitting the ball hard all game.
The second game featured a great collective effort, as they Panthers notched a win against the hottest team in the conference. This was a huge win for the Panthers moving forward, and they will look to build off of it in their next series, which begins this Friday at 6:00 PM at home versus Blackburn College.
