Box Score Elsah, IL-- In their official home-opener, the Principia College men's soccer team hosted Illinois College in double-header with the women's side.
It took a bit of time for Principia to find their feet but when they did, they again did well with possession. In an exciting individual effort, freshman Brazilian Gabriel Theodoro made his mark scoring a beautiful goal after beating several IC players. This score took the Panthers into halftime up 1-0.
The second half forced Illinois College to apply higher pressure. Principia struggled again to find their groove. The men continued to keep attacking, drawing fouls including one that resulted in a free kick that went off the post. But in the final 15 minutes, Principia conceded a corner kick. An unmarked Illinois College player came flying through and put the ball in the back of the net. The end of regulation finished 1-1.
After a brief 5 minute break, golden goal overtime began. For 9:45 the ball avoided the net for both teams. But in the waning seconds, a foul was conceded by Illinois College at the top of the box. This time, captain and birthday boy
Briggs Hurley stepped up and scored ending the game amidst cheers and a pile of enthusiastic teammates.
The Panthers are now 1-1 and face up against St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Tuesday.
