Panther Baseball splits with Rust College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Holly Springs, MS. - The Panthers traveled to take on the Rust Bearcats in a doubleheader Friday afternoon. They split the series with the Bearcats, winning the first game but dropping the second.

Game 1

Sawyer Grow started on the mound and pitched a great game. Grow breezed through six innings, scattering five hits and just one run while striking out five. Parker Tibbetts closed the game by pitching a perfect seventh inning including back-to-back strikeouts to start the inning.

The Panthers collected nine hits in the first game. After being held scoreless through the first two innings, Jeff Ross led off the third inning with a triple to deep left center. Connor Coyne roped a single to bring Ross home one batter later and the Panthers never looked back. Zach Grennie and Coyne each picked up two hits in the series opener. Sean Hannan, Coyne, and Ross all collected RBIs as the Panthers rolled to a 5-1 victory in game one.

Game 2

Game two was a struggle for the Panthers, which allowed the Bearcats to earn the split on the doubleheader.

Alex Stamos was the starting pitcher; he threw six innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits while striking out six.

The Panthers struggled to find their rhythm at the plate in the latter game. They tallied six hits as a team and Sean Hannan contributed three of those six hits. Liam Foster, Connor Coyne and Zach Grennie also contributed in the hit column.

Ed Bargmann drew a walk in the top half of the first inning and then scored on Zach Grennie's line drive single a few batters later. The Panthers didn't do much else offensively until the final frame when Coyne belted a two-run round tripper with one out to cut the Bearcats lead to one. The Bearcats were able to strike out the final two batters of the game to come away with a 4-3 win in the back end of the doubleheader to earn a split with the Panthers.

The Panthers now stand at 5-3 overall and are still 1-0 in SLIAC play. They return to a action on Monday against D'Youville College in Auburndale, Florida. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
