Panthers sweep Robert Morris Springfield in home doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Elsah, ILL. - The Panthers extended their winning streak to five games today as they swept the Robert Morris Springfield Eagles. The Panthers won game one 5-1 and then came out victorious 5-3 in game two thanks to a walk-off two-run homerun by Connor Coyne.

Game One

Alex Stamos received the nod on the mound and had another impressive outing. Stamos threw six innings where he scattered eight hits while surrendering just one run. He struck out six batters, and his ERA dropped to 1.82 on the year which is good for fifth in conference. The Panthers turned to Parker Tibbetts in the seventh inning and Tibbetts delivered, retiring the side in order. Tibbetts has embraced the role of the closer and has been great the last few games for the Panthers.

The Panthers continued hitting well as they picked up nine hits. Ed Bargmann, Zach Grennie and Jake Kearney chipped in with two hits apiece while Connor Coyne, Bryce Murray and Will Adler each picked up base hits of their own. Grennie and Kearney each drove in two runs and Bargmann and Jeff Ross each scored two runs. Grennie and Kearney combined for nine total bases in game one as Grennie doubled twice and Kearney had a double and a stand up triple.

The Panthers scored early and often in game one, scoring five runs in the first four innings. They took game one from the Eagles, 5-1.

Game 2

Hunter Mehring received the start in game two and pitched very well. Mehring hurled six innings and gave up five hits and three runs. He made one mistake when he hung a curve ball which resulted in a three run blast for the Eagles, but he was dominant aside from that one pitch. The Panthers brought in Sawyer Grow in the seventh and Grow tossed a scoreless inning. He improved his ERA to 1.57 which is second on the team and fourth overall in the SLIAC.

The bats really came alive in this game as the Panthers tallied for 15 hits. Parker Davidson was moved up to the number two hole and responded by going 4-4 with two runs scored. Connor Coyne had three hits, including the walk-off two-run round tripper. Ed Bargmann and Ryan Eisenauer each contributed with a pair of base knocks and Bargmann drove in a pair of runs. He is now hitting .434 which is still the best average in the conference.

The Panthers were tied at three apiece entering the home half of the seventh inning. Parker Davidson started the final frame off with a single through the left side. He then stole second base which ended up being irrelevant because Coyne stepped up to the plate and with two strikes, lined the ball over the fence in left center to end the game.

The Panthers have now won five straight and are sitting with a 10-5 record (1-0 in conference). They are still in first place in the SLIAC East Division. They return to action at home Tuesday against the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers in a SLIAC matchup beginning at 5:00 p.m.
