Men’s Swimming swims hard but falls to Maryville University

ELSAH, IL. —As the Principia College Men's Swimming team wrapped up Friday night's meet, they were back at it this Saturday morning competing in a duel meet against Maryville University. Due to having the high school order of events the night before, this meet included the 50's, of each stroke, 100 IM, 100 Free, 200's of each stroke, 500 Free, and the 1000 Freestyle. 

To begin the meet, junior captain Andrew Boyd, sophomore Liam Anderson, junior captain Garrett Barner, and sophomore Walker Hannigan swam the 200 Medley Relay for a combined time of 1:48.27. Boyd swam the first length Back (28.65), Anderson Breaststroke (30.87), Barner Fly (25.34), and Hannigan Free (23.41).  This event was a race to the wall; however, the men on Maryville managed to out touch PC.  Also, Anderson gained a season best, unshaved lifetime best, and lifetime best with his time in his 50 Breast split. 

Once the 200 Medley Relay concluded, Barner (2:03.93), Anderson (2:11.80), and freshman Josh Williams (2:19.71) swam the 200 Free. During the race the men secured 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. In addition, Anderson gained an unshaved lifetime best and lifetime best with his time.  

As the 200 Free came to a fast close, the meet continued right away, moving into the 50 Back and the 50 Breast. Boyd swam the 50 Back for a time of 28.21 and Anderson the 50 Breast for a time of 31.94. Anderson also fortified another unshaved lifetime best and lifetime best during this race! As Anderson finished his race, Hannigan stepped up to swim his 200 Fly, which ended with a time of 2:11.91. 

Before 1 Meter Diving began, the teams wrapped up the swims with the 50 Freestyle. Both Boyd (24.71) and Williams (27.91) swam the race and locked in 2nd and 3rd place. 

After a short break and 1 Meter Diving, the men were gearing to go! Barner (54.44), Hannigan (55.12), and Williams (1:01.52) all swam the 100 Free strong. The 200 Back was up next, which Boyd was a part of. Boyd swam his race securing 2nd and touching the wall with a 2:19.47. Anderson jumped in right after swimming the 200 Breast with a time of 2:41.07.

Barner gave it his all on the 500 Free, coming into the wall in 2nd place with a time of 5:42.52. Hannigan (26.91) also came in 2nd as well with his time in the 50 Fly. Both of these times gained an unshaved lifetime best and lifetime best.

After another short break and 3 Meter Diving, the meet finished up with the 200 Freestyle Relay. Boyd took on the first length with a time of 24.29, Williams the second with a 26.76, Anderson the third with a 24.62, and lastly Hannigan with a 23.98. These were fast swims and Anderson once again gained a season best and unshaved lifetime best on his split

Overall, this meet prepared the team for Liberal Arts due to being back-to-back days with the Washington University Invite. Also, the swimmers were able to pull out some fast swims to achieve their goal of 11 bests with the Women's team.

The Men's Swimming team will be heading out to Lebanon, IL in order to participate in McKendree's Quad Meet on January 20th at 1pm.
