Panthers Fail to Overcome First Half Deficit and Lose 87-65 to Washington University

St. Louis, Mo- The Principia Men's Basketball team traveled to nearby Washington University to take on the Bears in a non conference matchup. Washington came into the game with a 4-3 record as Principia looked to get back on track with a 1-5 record. Despite a constant fight from the Panthers, the Bears were able to lead the entire game and run away with a 87-65 point victory.

The game started off at a quick pace as both teams hit the ground running. Washu was able to jump out to a 8-2 lead hitting on their first few shots before the Prin responded with back to back layups by TreVaughn Goodman and Nate Brantingham. The Bears started the first 10 minutes of the game hot as they were able to score at will both inside and out. With 9 minutes remaining in the first half the Panthers trailed by 18 points. Following a timeout Principia would lock in on defense and claw back into the game. Micah Paulson was able to spark a run for the Panthers assisting on a corner three by Zach Matters and hitting consecutive baskets to cut the lead to 12 points. Down the stretch of the first half Washu was able to take advantage of a few miscues and push the lead up to 21 with a 45-24 point lead.

The second half played out fairly even as the Panthers hung tough throughout. To start the half the Bears continued their good offensively play and were able to take their largest lead of the game at 29 points. Freshman Kevin Wingert took advantage of his first minutes of the game playing great defense and hitting his only shot of the game with a corner three pointer.
