Elsah, ILL. -- The Women's Basketball team played SLU Club at home on Saturday as Blackburn had to cancel the team's originally scheduled game. The Panthers were grateful that SLU was available to play. Principia fought hard the whole game, but the Billikins left with the "w", the final score was 44-57.
The Panthers and SLU were tied 14-14 after the first quarter, but SLU outplayed Principia in the 2
nd quarter going up by 10 points. The shooting percentage for Principia went from 42% to 23%, unfortunately. The Panthers played a tough second half, only being outscored by 3 points.
A Look at the Box Score:
The SLU Club out-rebounded Principia by 13, including 16 offensive rebounds. Turnovers were fairly even with 15 for SLU and 17 for Principia.
Nikki Matters was the high scorer for Principia with 23 points, followed by
Anna Webster with 9 and
Hannah Hathaway with 8. With some players unable to play, it was a full effort by those available on the bench.
Good to know:
Both teams shot well from the free throw line. SLU shot 83% and Principia shot 73%, which has been a strength for the Panthers all season.
They said it:
"We had been working more on defense lately and it was nice to see this pay off in the game. Unfortunately, we had three players unavailable to play today. But it always gives others the opportunity to contribute and I was proud of how the entire team responded and played tough until the very end. "
