Panthers Celebrate Home Opener and Sweep Series

Elsah, ILL. – Principia hosted the Robert Morris – Springfield Eagles for a double header to wrap up their four game series.  This was the home opener for the Panthers and after taking the first two games, the Panthers were on the prowl for the sweep.  Alex Stamos started game one and looked sharp right out of the gate throwing three, 1-2-3 innings in a row.  The Panther bats were coming off a 32 run day and proved they still had some life in them.  Jake Kearney led off the second with a double and came around to score on an errant throw by the Eagle shortstop a play later.  In the third, Parker Davidson led things off with his second hit, scoring on a McMullin RBI.  The first hit against Stamos came in the top of the fourth on a bunt fielded by Kearney and a bang-bang play at first. After being sacrificed to second, Stamos stranded the runner by getting the next two batters. The Panthers added to their lead in the fifth after Davidson's leadoff double, his third hit of the game.  McMullin singled and Stephen Strong collected two RBIs on his first hit of the game.  Strong eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Kearney.   Stamos continued to baffle the Eagle lineup facing the minimum the remainder of the way, thanks to two double plays.  Principia took game one 6-0 as Stamos recorded his first win of the season.  Parker Davidson led the Panthers in game one going three for three at the plate with a walk and two runs scored.

Jake Kearney took the bump in the final game of the series.  Like Stamos, Kearney pitched to contact, getting ahead early and kept Robert Morris hitters guessing.  Parker Davidson stayed hot and led off the game with a double.  He stole third and was knocked in by the Panther three hole hitter, Aleq McMullin to score the first run of the game.  In the bottom of the second, Sean Hannan started things off with a smashed single advancing to third on an error by the Eagle third baseman.  Jeff Ross worked his way on base followed by a Ryan Eisenauer single.  Eddie Bargmann, Aleq McMullin, Stephen Strong and Jake Kearney all singled back to back to push four runs across extending the lead to 5.  Eddie Bargmann tripled in the bottom of the third helping the Panthers tack on three more.  The Eagles lone run came in the 5th with back to back no out singles.  Kearney settled down to retire the next three batters, giving up one run scoring on a groundball out to short.  Brett Huntley caught Kearney's last two innings giving Eisenauer some much needed rest with a double header this upcoming Tuesday.  Principia pitching was lights out as both starters were able to go the distance.  The bats continued to show pop and the defense was solid once again.  This combination helped propel the Panthers to their first sweep of the season and their eighth win. Kearney tallied his third win of the season.

He Said It:
"It felt really good to come out in front of the home fans for the first time this year and win the way we did.  Everybody came out and played at a high level, and the fact that we maintained that level all weekend was great.  Our offense put on a show this weekend and made my job as a pitcher that much easier.  I'm really looking forward to keeping this momentum rolling."
        – Alex Stamos on the opening day wins.
