Principia Men's Soccer Bounces Back with Away Win at Fontbonne

Clayton, MO

Principia Men's Soccer hit the road on Tuesday night to face Fontbonne University in their sixth conference match of the season.  The Panthers looked to bounce back from a difficult loss to Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday, while Fontbonne hoped to jumpstart their season after losing several close games in SLIAC competition.

The match started even with both teams finding shots on goal.  Senior goalkeeper, Mourad Sami, made four saves in the first half, most of which came in the opening 20 minutes.  Principia poured on the pressure at the end of the first half but were unable to capitalize on any opportunities.

The Principia men played a strong second half, outshooting the Griffins 15 to 3.  They were patient and persistent in their effort, and their hard work paid off in the 74th minute as Cameron Sellers jumped on a long throw-in that fell inside the box (Principia 1 – 0 Fontbonne).  Principia continued to control the match with strong tackles and consistent possession.  In the 85th minute, Principia created another chance on a quick break.  Sellers picked up the ball in the middle of the field and slid a pass through Fontbonne's back line to Cole Heinbaugh who tucked the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal (Principia 2 – 0 Fontbonne).

Seniors Jordan Jones and Matthew McLeod-Warrick helped see out the final minutes of the game along with first-year Liam Peschke and Junior Aaron Marczi.
The Principia men earned the win to go 5-1 in SLIAC competition.  The next match will be played at Spalding University on Saturday, October 26th at 2PM.
