Elsah, IL.--Principia hosted MacMurray College in the first game of SLIAC conference play this 2019 fall. With cooler temperatures than earlier in the week, it was a good day for a soccer game.
Most if the excitement of the game happened in the opening ten minutes. MacMurray scored the first goal in under 5 minutes, but Principia, not to be outdone, found an equalizer. A chipped ball over the top from Sophia Hathway led Hannah Sipe into the offensive third for a one-on-one with the keeper. Composure and grace allowed Sipe to slide past the keeper and place the ball neatly in the back of the net.
The next 80 minutes went scoreless as both teams tried their luck. MacMurray outshot the Panthers but keeper Hannah Hathaway, Tara Adhikari and Kiona Sperr led the defensive stand. Taylan Hayes had a header save off the goaline. The final 10 minutes of the game Principia dominated but could not find the net.
1-1 at the end of regulation means two 10 minute overtime periods with Golden Goal. In the final 40 seconds of the first overtime (99 minutes into the game) the final goal found it's way into the back of the net in favor of MacMurray.
Principia was missing three starters for the match, but today's team came together and demonstrated grit.
The Panthers travel to Eureka, IL on Tuesday for a game against conference opponent Eureka College.
