Elsah, ILL. -- Men's Tennis came out firing against Simpson College on Saturday morning at Hexberg. Coach
Rusty Jones sent out an improvised doubles lineup, featuring
Nat Kenworthy and
Brody Swan playing together for the first time at the top doubles spot. While they dominated their matchup, the action on other courts quickly became interesting. Elliott Mathieson and
Esteban Rojas Acuna never got going at 3
rd doubles and lost 8-2, though they used the opportunity to make solid progress as a pair.
Dan Wagstaff and
Peter Griswold fell behind 3-1 playing number two for the first time, but rebounded quickly with the swing doubles point on the line. They activated sport mode to break back at 3-3, only dropping two games down the stretch in one of their better matches together.
Singles was another story as the Panthers blew through Simpson with most of their full lineup.
Daniel Gomez blanked his man to finish first and
Wyatt Dale continued to find his groundstrokes in a comfortable win.
Greg Sovie and
Jules Kitchingman cleaned up at the three and four spots, only letting three games go between them.
Kenworthy got some much-needed rest as he balances a particularly difficult academic load this semester, so Swan came in at five singles to work his crosscourt forehand and paint some lines for an easy win. Wagstaff closed the match with a methodical win at number six, making it an 8-1 final.
The Panthers next play at home on April 6
th against Wisconsin Eau-Claire, one of their most important matches of the season. The fans' support is greatly appreciated, so be sure to come out!
