Elsah, Il—
In their second match of the day the women's team battled to a 4-4 tie with both
Paige Cooley and
Greer Sprague winning their singles and their double matches. At first doubles,
Paige Cooley and
Gabby Kitchingman dominated play with forceful ground strokes and great scrambling for the ball by both players. They overpowered their opponents and forced them into errors. At #2 doubles,
Hallie Jones and
Greer Sprague were tough at the net with strong volleys by both players. Hallie was pounding in some big serves providing opportunity for Greer to poach. At #3 doubles,
Amber Heady and
Caroline Carlson were coming back in their match after they gave the opponents a big lead to start the match. Amber and Caroline were both hitting crisp volleys and Amber was cracking some powerful serves. It was great progress for the two of them and they felt like they were working together.
There were several close singles matches. At #2 singles,
Gabby Kitchingman, was playing steady tennis and turned the second set around to favor her. She was moving her opponent from side to side and forcing errors. She had some opportunities to win the second set but the opponent played steady and ran down some great shots from Gabby and secured the two set win, 6-3,7-5. At #1 Singles,
Paige Cooley dominated play and did not lose a game.
Another exciting singles match was #3 singles, where
Greer Sprague played an opponent that hit strong deep ground strokes. Every point in this match had long baseline rallies. Greer was steady and was able to use the power of her opponent to send the ball back deep repeatedly.
Emma Hanser, #6 singles joined the team this week after her successful swim season. She played well in her first week back. Emma has a forceful game and is working to contain her power.
The women's team has two players who went to Springfield to compete on the Moot Court team.
Brittany Duke and
Sarah Switzer will return to tennis competition next week. The women's team is hosting another tri-match against local JCC teams: Lewis and Clark and Kaskaskia. Come out next weekend and support the team at 1 PM and 4 PM.
