Panthers close out a win 5-4 against Webster

Elsah, Il—

Our two seniors, Paige Cooley and Hallie Jones, honored on today's Senior Day both had convincing wins in the team's 5-4 take down of the Gorlocks.  Paige won her singles match with an onslaught of powerful forehands and deft volleys.  She closed out many points at the net after she forced weak replies from her opponent.  Hallie played steady tennis and also closed out many points with her strong overhead and accurate volleys.  Greer Sprague, #3 singles, won the first set with steady ground strokes. She wore down her opponent who had to retire early in the second set.

After the doubles matches, Principia trailed 2-1.  Principia won at first doubles with strong returns by Gabby Kitchingman and Paige.  Principia's #2 and #3 doubles teams were out of sync and unable to complement each other's play.  They are looking forward to a rematch next Friday in the conference semi-finals.

Sarah Switzer, #6 singles, was the pivotal match in the Principia win.  She was down in the first few games of the set but rallied back to take a lead.  Sarah played steady tennis and forced her opponent into errors.  She won the last seven games in a row to cinch the match for Principia.

The team plays conference rival Westminster at home on Tuesday April 16th.  The match will begin at 5 PM.  Come out and support the team's last home match of the season.
