Saint Louis, MO. -- On the first perfect tennis day of the season the Panthers close out a singles match against the strong Wash U team.
Paige Cooley and
Gabby Kitchingman, #1 doubles hit their powerful groundstrokes and produced several winners. The match was exciting to watch with many long points, closed out with volley winners. Principia's other doubles teams were outhit by the more experienced Wash U players.
Paige Cooley, #1 singles, earns Principia's first win over a Wash U tennis opponent. Paige hit crushing forehands and big serves forcing her opponent in several errors. Paige took control of the first set winning 6-1. In the pivotal game of the second set, with the score evened at 2-2, Paige played scrappy tennis running down several forceful forehands. At deuce, Paige reached a wide forehand and pushed up a high lob that earned an error from her opponent. She won the advantage point for the break and did not lose another game. Paige also hit several excellent slice backhands, one a running wide slice for a down the line winner.
The tough Wash U match prepares the team for their final matches of the season. On Friday, the team plays Illinois College at home at 5 PM. Saturday is senior day for the women's team where we will honor our seniors,
Paige Cooley and
Hallie Jones. The match and senior recognition start at 10:30 AM. Come out and honor our senior players and cheer for the team when we take on Webster our tough conference rival.
