Batesville, AR-- Today the women's soccer team played the Lyon College Scotts in a non conference match in Arkansas. Due to a misunderstanding with the referees, the game was delayed 2.5 hours from the original 1pm start time. As these things sometimes happen, the Panthers graciously spent time in the locker room, waiting for two referees to make the hour and half drive to the game. However, t
he delay did throw a few Principia players for a loop, causing mental lapses in their preparation which would become apparent in the first half. During the first 22 minutes of the game, the Panthers were not mentally engaged and as a result, the Scotts were able to capitalize on two quick goals. After the first water break, the Panther back line buckled down and Kiona Sperr, Tara Adhikari, Taylan Hayes, Yana Wood, and goalkeeper, Hannah Hathaway kept the Scotts scoreless the rest of the first half.
The Panthers battled back in the second half, causing the Scotts defense to work a bit harder. The Scotts would capitalize off a defensive mistake to make the game 3-0 but that didn't stop the Panthers from continuing to work. The Panthers would have the last say of the game when nearing the end of the second half, Maddie Wann receives a pass from Sophia Hathaway on the right wing, takes it endline, and plays back to the pk spot for Sophia Hathaway to put the ball in the net. The game would end with the Panthers losing 1-3.
If the Panthers had started strong in the beginning rather than waiting until the end, the result would have been different. Our hope is that this Tuesday, September 10, we have a better showing when we play Illinois College at their home field at 7:30pm.
