Men's Tennis Dominates Wisconsin Lutheran, Handles Illinois Wesleyan
The Panthers traveled to Bloomington, Illinois for another tri-match on Saturday. The afternoon contest against Wisconsin Lutheran came as more of a warmup for the team, as they dropped only two games across all nine doubles and singles matches. MVG, otherwise known as the doubles team of William Johnson and Elliott Matthiesen, picked up their first win on the doubles court together. As it was also Matthiesen's birthday, he decided to celebrate by winning every game in singles.
Illinois Wesleyan provided a stiffer test, but not one too difficult for the Panthers to overcome. Daniel Gomez and Juan Segovia put the first point on the board at 2nd doubles, and a win from Wyatt Dale and Greg Sovie put the team up 2-1 going into singles.
The Panthers wrapped things up quickly as Gomez, Dale, and Segovia each cruised to routine wins, while Sovie pulled through an initially uneven second set to dominate the tiebreak. Johnson narrowly dropped his first set by a break but couldn't get any closer in the second. Although Matthiesen didn't get another singles win, he takes consolation in the fact that he leads the league in google maps navigation.
Saturday is the Panthers' home opener! They face Millikin at noon, followed by St. Louis College of Pharmacy at 3 pm. Come out to Hexberg to support the boys!
