ELSAH, IL – The Principia Women's Soccer team made the most of a beautiful afternoon on Saturday, celebrating three seniors en route to a 3-0 shutout win over a shorthanded Blackburn team.
Seniors
Viviane de Castro,
Kaija Ufert, and
Heather Savoye were honored in the pregame for their many contributions to the program over the past few seasons and this year!
The Panthers got off to a fast start, earning three corner kicks and five shots in the first ten minutes of the game. The pressure would soon yield results, as a long range shot by
Viviane de Castro broke the deadlock in the 13th minute for her eighth of the season. Soon thereafter, a bobbling ball in the box found
Adriana Rucks' head as she sent it towards the goal. As the goalie dove for the save,
Kaylee Kleist got her head on the ball to redirect it into the net for her first goal at Principia.
Principia would keep the pressure on, dominating the game with 28 shots and 15 corner kicks, but the stout Blackburn defense and goalkeeping made it hard for the home side to add to their 2-0 lead. The Panthers defense didn't allow a single shot from the visitors.
In the 66th minute,
Kannon Gill was brought down in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick for her third goal of the season. The game would finish 3-0 in front of a big crowd of alumni and family weekend visitors.
Up Next: Principia looks to stay in the win column as they travel to Louisville to play Spalding on Tuesday for a 5:30 pm (eastern time) kickoff.
