EUREKA, IL – The Principia Men's Soccer team battled the Eureka Red Devils in the last game of the regular season on Saturday. The Panthers needed a win or a Fontbonne loss or both games to end in ties to clinch the third seed in the SLIAC Tournament.
Principia's
Torben Rehnert had another great game as he made five saves to earn his eighth shutout of the season. Other top performers were senior defenders
EG Pierce and
Juniour Baraza, as well as fellow senior
Patrick Sherman in the midfield. On the attack, Wisdom Afrani and
Parker Boyce both created great opportunities. Unfortunately, the Panthers were unable to beat the Eureka keeper and the game ended 0-0.
In Fontbonne's game, they were leading Westminster on the brink of overtaking Principia in the standings, but Westminster scored with 30 seconds remaining to get a draw and secure third place for the Panthers. Principia finishes the regular season with a 8-4-5 overall record with a .678% win percentage.
Up Next: The third place finish means Principia gets to host a playoff game, and their opponent will be a rematch with Eureka. The game will be held on Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm. Come pack the stands for the big game!
