GREENVILLE, IL – The Panthers' Men's Soccer team traveled to Greenville University on Saturday looking to end their two-game slide and exact revenge on their first conference loss to Greenville earlier this season.
Principia got off to a great start when
Victor Dos Santos Reis opened the scoring in the 6th minute.
Parker Boyce made a run around multiple Greenville defenders and then slotted a perfect cross through the box between the defense. The ball went straight to Reis' right foot, who put the ball past the keeper for his third of the season. After the first goal, the visiting Panthers struggled to sustain possession out of their half and exited the first half with a 1-0 lead.
As the second half began, Greenville pushed hard for the equalizer. In the 62nd minute, right after a close scoring chance for Principia, Greenville countered with a fast break leading to a breakaway for the home team. The Greenville forward caught Principia keeper
Torben Rehnert out of position and chipped it over his head to tie the game at 1-1.
Rehnert earned his redemption in the 75th minute when he made a massive diving save off a Greenville penalty kick to keep the game tied. Principia defender
Christian Tresoldi also saved a Greenville shot off the goal line late in the game to preserve the draw.
Principia's offense reignited to full force in the final 15 minutes, creating multiple lethal opportunities. The best effort came from a shot by
Matheus Dos Santos Reis whose shot that rattled off the back post from the top of the box. The rebound fell to
Liam Peschke twelve yards from goal, but his shot hit the same post. Despite the surge of attack, Principia was not able to find the winning goal, and the game ended 1-1.
Up Next: The Panthers will look to climb back to the top of the SLIAC table this Tuesday when they host Westminster College in Elsah at 8:15 pm.
