TERRE HAUTE, IN – The Principia Men's Tennis Team hit the road again to face Rose-Hulman in western Indiana on Saturday. The Panthers got wins at the top of the lineup in a 6-3 loss to the Fightin' Enginneers.
Daniel Gomez and Juan Segovia continued their success together at #1 doubles, cruising to an easy win. However, that was all the Panthers would get in doubles, and they entered singles play down 2-1.
Segovia held off a late charge at #2 singles with steady hitting from the baseline, and his win evened the overall match at 2-2. Rose-Hulman went on a run from there as they took the next four matches, but Elliott Matthiesen and Everett Poznick put some good points together at #5 and #6 singles. Rafter Sprague was playing well at #3 after a slow start and had chances to win the second set after going up a break 4-2, but too many errors cost him the match.
Gomez was solid in a first set win, but he fell down 3-0 in the second set when his opponent raised his level. He fought back to get on serve at 3-3, and traded games until 5-5. Gomez then broke serve to go up 6-5 and held serve to close out a strong win.
Up Next: Principia will play a tri-match with Illinois Wesleyan and North Central next Saturday on Illinois Wesleyan's campus in Bloomfield, IL.
