ST. LOUIS, MO - The Principia College baseball team traveled to the newly renovated Adzick Field at Shaw Park in Saint Louis to take on the Fontbonne Griffins in a three game series this weekend.
Friday's match up featured Salvador Flores on the mound for the Panthers and Nick Glaser for the Griffins. Both pitchers worked quickly and were efficient each throwing up zeros in the first two innings. The Griffins cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on four hits. The Griffins added two unearned runs in the fourth before Ryan D'Amico picked up the Panthers first hit in the fifth. The Panthers ran out of steam in the bottom of the sixth as they gave up six runs to fall behind 12-0. Alex Zozaya entered to pitch and quickly picked up the final out. The Panthers hit the ball hard, but had nothing to show for it in the loss.
Chris Strong pitched game one on Saturday, and the Fontbonne bats struck early plating four runs in the bottom of the first. Flores drew a lead off walk and was singled to second by Casey Golbiw. D'Amico flew out to right advancing Flores, who then scored on the sac fly by Owen Murphy. In the top of the fourth, the Panthers scored Flores again on a Golbiw double to left field. Gavin Brustman threw a scoreless fifth inning picking up his first career strikeout.
The Griffins ran away with game three scoring seven runs in the first inning off Golbiw. Jack Adler threw three innings in relief, including a scoreless fourth inning. Zozaya made his third appearance of the series and threw a scoreless fifth in his two innings of work. The Panther offense was lead by Adler who had two hits including a solo homerun – his second of the season. Strong had two hits of his own, and D'Amico knocked a double.
Up Next: The Panthers return home next weekend as they host Eureka College on Friday, April 8 at 5 pm, followed by a double header on April 9Â starting at 12 pm.
