ELSAH, IL – For the second time this season, the Principia Women's Tennis team welcomed local community college Lewis & Clark to Elsah for an exhibition match. In their first meeting last September, the Trail Blazers defeated the Panthers 7-2, so the Principia women were looking to exact some revenge on Monday.
Principia got off to a great start by sweeping the doubles matches. The #3 doubles team, Ruth Hummell and Philena Kuester, were down 6-2 before they turned the match around and won 6 straight games to earn an 8-6 win. At #2 doubles, Saray Hernandez Cisneros and Kelsie Huss started out strongly and continued their steady play to secure an 8-3 win. At #1 doubles, Bissola Lassissi and Veronica Volkart went ahead early, but the Trail Blazers fought back to a 5-5 tie. From there, the Principians locked down the last 3 games to win the match 8-5.
In singles, Huss earned the first singles point at #3 with a 6-1, 6-3 win as she played a steady game and ran down every ball. Lewis & Clark got on the board with wins at #1, #2, and #4 singles to bring the score to 4-3 meaning the match would come down to #5 and #6 singles. Kimbeley Peterson returned to the Panthers' singles line up at #5 after a few weeks off and only lost one game in a dominant performance to clinch the match . Kuester also won her singles match 6-3, 6-1 for an impressive 2-0 day.
