ELSAH, IL – The Principia Baseball team hosted the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics in a non-conference match up on a chilly Tuesday evening in Elsah.
Charlie Reiss made his first career collegiate start. The wind was gusting as the temperature dropped for first pitch. Reiss picked up a quick first out, but two errors and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. A sac fly plated the first run, and a double scored the second before a ground out to short ended the threat. With one out in the bottom of the inning,
Ben Perrine ripped a triple to right center field but was stranded. USHP added more in the second when an error and two hit by pitches loaded the bases with one out. A sac fly plated the first run and a home run emptied the bases to take a 6-0 lead. The Eutectics would eventually take a commanding 13-0 lead in the fifth scoring six runs on four hits.
Gavin Brustman entered for the Panthers and threw two and two thirds innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers cracked the scoreboard.
Ethan Booth led things off with a hit by pitch, and
Josh Bayless singled him to second. After
Josh Dement walked to load the bases,
Ben Perrine singled to left driving in two, and an error allowed Dement to score from first.
Ryan D'Amico doubled to plate Perrine, and
Rat Mean singled to score D'Amico before the Eutectics were able to collect the final out to win 17-5.
Stat of the Game: Mean and Perrine led the Panthers with two hits apiece. D'Amico, Matchell, Bayless and Ramsey each collected a hit on the day.
Marton's Minute: "Baseball can be a humbling game. Some days you catch all the breaks, and other days you can't catch a break. It's tough to compete with seven errors in a game. Hopefully we can iron some of the kinks out over the next couple day and come out ready to compete this weekend."
Up Next: The Panthers will head to Greenville on Saturday to play a conference double header at 12:00 and 3:00 PM.
