ELSAH, IL – The Principia women's soccer team came extremely close to earning their first result of the season on Saturday, but ultimately allowed the game-winner to the visiting Brescia University Bearcats in the dying moments for a tough 1-0 loss.
For most of the match, Principia displayed exceptional defensive organization, with standout performances from
Maddie Frank,
Zayana Brown,
Aylin Acosta,
Makayla Kurtz, and
Mirsa Boyer. Together, they helped thwart numerous Brescia attacks, helping keep the game deadlocked for 87 minutes. Behind them, goalkeeper
Christin Walls was in stellar form, making 9 saves to bring her total to 34 through the first three contests.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, Brescia was able to find the back of the next with just under three minutes remaining to end the shutout and earn the win. Despite the loss, Principia played their best game of the season as they continue building towards conference play. While they were still unable to break through with their first goal of the season, the Panthers offensive attack showed much more promise. Principia fired 8 shots with
Dachelle Carter and
Sarah Smith each narrowly missing scoring just inches wide.
Principia will face another NAIA opponent at home on Tuesday evening as they host UHSP at 6:30 pm.
