ELSAH, IL – After winning an exhibition earlier in the week, the Principia men's tennis team hosted their first real match of the 2025 season on Saturday against the University of Saint Mary and came away with a 5-2 win.
This season, the NCAA Division III changed their scoring method so that whichever team wins the majority of the three doubles matches gains just one point. Doubles sets are also now played to six instead of eight. Principia held their own at the top of the lineup with their #1 and #2 doubles pairs each earning 6-4 wins to capture the big opening point.
In singles, two matches required a ten-point tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets as
Nacho Cachaza lost 10-3 at #2, while
Ignacio Zamora won 10-6 at #4.
Jesús Soto Bossa got his season started off strong with a tough 7-5, 6-4 victory in the #1 slot. Soto Bossa was voted UMAC South Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his efforts.
Kuda Sandi and
Christian Tresoldi each bounced back from their doubles loss and played well in singles to earn straight set wins at #5 and #6.
The Panthers will look to build off their 1-0 start when they host both Simpson College and Wabash College next Saturday.
