CANTON, MO – The Principia College track & field team competed at the Culver Stockton Wildcat Invitational last Friday. This was the final meet leading up to the SLIAC Championship meet at Greenville.
It was a historic weekend for the women's program as three long-standing school records went down.
Hannah Myers set a new long jump record with her performance of 5.32 meters (17 feet and 5.5 inches). The previous record was set in 1986 by Kathy Kavana with a mark of 17 feet and 5 inches. Myers also broke a high jump record that was set in 1991 by Kerste Bryant. Myers jumped 1.66 meters (5 feet and 5.25 inches) which took first place at the meet including Division I competitors. The previous record was set at 5 feet and 3.25 inches. Myers performance in the high jump is currently ranked 11th in the nation in Division III.
Sana Udoekong was the other record-breaker at the Wildcat Invitational. Udoekong broke the outdoor 200 meter record with her blazing fast performance of 24.75 seconds. The previous record was held by national champion and Olympian, Ngozi Asinga, with a time of 24.98 seconds from 1992. Udoekong is currently ranked 36th in the nation in Division III. Myers and Udoekong were each named SLIAC Women's Track & Field Athletes of the Week thanks to their record-setting performances.
There were several other notable performances on Friday.
Kiara Smith placed second in high jump with a mark of 1.56 meters (5 feet and 1.25 inches) that ranks sixth all-time in Principia history. Smith finished fourth in long jump with a mark of 5.12 meters (16 feet and 9.75 inches) that ranks third all-time for Principia women's track & field.
Sophia Green finished in fourth place in the 5K with a time of 20 minutes and 53 seconds.
Howard James placed 3rd in long jump for the men with a mark of 6.88 meters (22 feet and 6.75 inches).
Mark Fisher finished 6th in the hammer throw with a throw of 44.8 meters.
Zach Proctor finished 6th in the 5K with a time of 16 minutes and 39 seconds.
In team scoring, the women finished 6th of 11 teams and the men finished 10th of 13 teams. The Panthers compete at the SLIAC Championship meet this weekend on Friday and Saturday at Greenville University.
