COLUMBUS, MS – The Principia men's soccer team opened conference play with their furthest trip of the season down to Mississippi to take on the MUW Owls. The Panthers put together their best offensive performance yet this fall by scoring five goals in a 5-1 romp.
Principia got the scoring started early with a goal in the 8th minute by freshman
Eduardo Salazar assisted by senior
Effenberg Joya. Joya scored a goal of his own in the 24th minute as he headed the ball home off a corner by freshman
Alejandro Liborio.
Despite being up 2-0 at halftime, the Panthers kept the offensive pressure up coming out of the break. Less than a minute into the second half, senior
Nana Koranteng scored a third for Principia with another header – this time off a bounce from a perfect long ball from junior defender
Juan Garcia Lopez. Liborio added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute, and freshman
Eziuche Ejimadu scored a dagger in the 79th minute for a commanding 5-0 lead. MUW spoiled the clean sheet with five minutes remaining, but the Panthers left Mississippi with a 5-1 victory to begin SLIAC play 1-0.
Joya led the charge offensively with a goal and two assists as he extended his team lead in points with seven. Salazar and Ejimadu's goals were both the first of their collegiate career.
The Panthers return home for their final non-conference game of the season when they host Harris-Stowe at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, September 30.
