COLUMBUS, MS – The Principia women's soccer team traveled down to Mississippi this weekend for their first conference contest of the season. The Panthers took on the MUW Owls and came away with a hard fought 1-0 victory.
MUW created the majority of the offensive chances in the first half, but strong defending and multiple saves by
Christin Walls kept the Owls off the scoresheet. The Panthers turned up the intensity in the second half as they matched MUW with four shots on goal each. Walls continued to be a brick wall in net stopping all six Owls shots in the game.
In the 77th minute, Panther defender
Shayla Kelley sent a long ball forward that went off the head of an MUW defender towards her own goal. Forward
Dachelle Carter pounced on the loose ball and snuck it past the charging goalkeeper to score the only goal of the match. Carter then rammed into the keeper as she put her body on the line for the team to earn the second game-winning goal of her Panther career.
The Panthers will head to Kansas City this coming Wednesday for their rescheduled game with Spurgeon College, before hosting Eureka College next Saturday as they look to stay unbeaten in SLIAC play.
