Senior (2010)
Catherine has incredible knowledge of the game, great court vision, and a slide attack we consider a secret weapon. She will be a captain next year, and we appreciate her calm presence on the court. She is ready for a break out year with the hours she has spent in the gym perfecting her game. Coach Sprague believes we will feel the fruitage of her hard-work this year.
Junior (2009)
Cat got lots of playing time last year due to some injuries with our starters. Whatever the position, whatever the competitive climate, Cat showed us she is effective as a scorer and a blocker, and her well rounded skills filled in beautifully as she delivered great sets to our middle and outside hitters when called upon. Cat has a deadly serve we want to show our competitors too!
Sophomore (2008)
Cat has stepped into a new confidence this year with a power to inspire and motivate. Her communication from the bench gives encouragement and purpose to the team on the court and her contributions to daily inspirations and team meetings are thoughtful and supportive. Her grace and cheer extend peace to our team dynamic and freshness to daily practices.
Freshman (2007)
Catherine comes to Principia with experience as a passer, right side hitter and setter. We look to use Cat in a variety of positions and are excited that she is willing and able to learn the pace of the college game.
Prep/Personal
#1 - When did you start playing volleyball and what level (Club, Y, middle school)
I started playing volleyball the summer before 7th grade. I've played on a team now for 9 years, going on 10.
#2 - What positions have you played and which one is your preference
I have mostly played as an OH or a RS. I've been a setter at times, and when I first started playing, I was a DS. I've played all over, but I prefer the front row.
#3 - Have you been captain - when and how long?
I have been captain for two seasons of volleyball, Sophomore year for JV, and Senior year for varsity. Also, this season I will be a captain for Principia's volleyball team.
#4 - Vb awards and honors? (all-league, mvp)
This is all I know for sure: second-team all conference my senior year, most improved, and scholar-athlete multiple times.
#5 - Favorite kind of music?
I like a little bit of everything. It all depends on mood, atmosphere, the company, and the activity at hand.
#6 – Favorite Food?
Chocolate is always good!:) I love fruit, especially strawberries. So maybe chocolate covered strawberries?!
#7 – Favorite Movie?
I love lots of movies...comedy can be hilarious, drama is always entertaining, action is exciting, musicals and disney are classic.
#8 - If you were an animal, what would you be and why?
I think that I would be a harbor seal, because they get to enjoy the best of the sun, sand, and sea. :)
#9 - What is your favorite quote?
I have a lot of favorite quotes, but here is just one of them:
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous. Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. You're playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear our presence automatically liberates others."
Marianne Williamson
#10 - What do you think you will be doing and where in 10 years?
I think that I will either be working as a graphic designer or an event planner (maybe even more specialized as a wedding planner), and I will definitely be someplace that doesn't have a winter - either that or I'll find a way to be self-employed and chase summer around the world.
#11 - Nickname and reason?
I was nicknamed Cat in high school when my coach decided that Catherine was too long to write in the line up on the board or during games. Since then, the name has taken many variations including, but not limited to, Kit Cat, Cata Amor, Catlanka, and Katrina.
#12 - What do you love best about the best sport in the world - VOLLEYBALL?
It's a team sport, and there is no way to get around that. You can't have just one star player carry the team. Everyone has to be fully invested into the game. You have six players on the court, and each player sontributes whether it's covering an area so as to disuade the hitter from tipping, or picking up a down ball, or setting up your teammate to have them terminate the point. There is so much that goes on in just a couple seconds that it is necessary for all six players to be mentally and physically alert at all times. They can't count on just one or two players to carry the time. Everyone is accountable for her own 110% contribution at all times.
On top of that, a person can't play the game themselves because they can only touch the ball once, and 1v6 is pretty easy to shut down, so it takes everyone to make a game and to make a team.
Plus, it's a really fun sport and one of the only ones where after every point, the players come to the middle (or look at each other) and congratulate or pick each other up. Enthusiasm and support is shared constantly throughout the entire game, and your teammates will never let you forget that. You know they'll always be there for you just like you will be there for them, and that really makes this a team.
