Principia Men Win at Fontbonne for the First Time in 19 years

Principia 74 Fontbonne 70

The men of Principia College went into Fontbonne Saturday afternoon winless in 19 years at Fontbonne.  Principia came out of Fontbonne this afternoon with a 74-70 upset.

Principia is now 2-4 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Conference.  The Panthers were lead by tenacious defense and balanced scoring.  Freshman Stanley Beal  scored 16 points on 6-7 shooting from the floor and 4-4 from the freethrow line.  On one occasion, Beal took a driving shot that rolled up the body and off the head of his opponent while getting fouled that somehow made it into the hoop and then converted the freethrow for an old fashioned 3-pointer. He now leads the conference in shooting percentage at .667.  Senior Sam Douglas lead all scorers with 18 points, shooting 4-7 beyond the arc.  The rest of the balanced scoring came from Todd Zimmernan with 14 points and 7 assists, Colin Angle with 11 points and Stuart Waller with 10.

The game was neck and neck most of the game.  No team lead by more than 6 points the entire game.  With about 1:00 left the game was tied when Waller hit a 3-pointer.  Fontbonne came right back down and responded with a bucket cutting it to two points.  On Prin's next possesion Zimmerman drove the ball down the lane drawing the foul.  He swished both free throws giving Prin a 3 point lead with 6.6 seconds.  Prin strategically fouled Fontbonne shortly after the inbound taking away the three point play opportunity.  Fontbonne missed both free throws and fouled Waller on the rebound. Waller made 1 of 2 freethrows giving Prin the 4 point victory.

Principia shot 54% from the field, 83% from the line and 50% from three.  The Panthers lead the conference in 3 pt. FG % and in assists per game.
