ELSAH, ILL. -- Principia lost their first home match tonight against Webster University, 0-3. Though Principia had last minute shake-ups in the line-up due to academics, players did a great job filling in the positions needed, and they went into the match with a game plan to offset Webster with tough serving, hitting the holes in Webster's defense, and keeping the ball flying on defense.
When Principia played by their game plan they had glimmers of success. On long rallies between both teams, Principia came out on top. When they kept the ball flying, they usually won the point due to Webster's unforced errors. When they hit to the spots they wanted, Webster would get chaotic and send easy balls back over. The area where Principia faltered the most was on serving. Players served many balls right to the spot where Webster wanted it, giving them opportunity to put the ball down.
In the third game, a more focused attempt at serving helped Principia gain more points with
Tara Edward's two aces, and
Isabelle Tetu's ace. Principia started out with first home game jitters but became bolder as the game continued. In the second game, after a big fight for the ball at the net, Tetu put down a hard hit that ricocheted off a Webster digger for an overpass that
Devin Sinner killed at the ten foot line on Webster's side. Also in the second game,
Christine Nacewicz put up a huge single block on the outside hitter that went straight to the ground. On defense,
Ally Read led the team with 21 digs.
After this tough first home match, Principia know the areas they want to focus on. Their next competitions will be on Saturday and Sunday at Manchester College's Invitational.
