Principia splits the day 1-1; losing to Webster, defeating Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, MO.--Today the Blue and Gold split the day one and one, losing to Webster and beating Fontbonne. They started the day against Webster, who came fresh off a huge five-game victory on Tuesday against the number one team in conference, Greenville. Webster's strong block was effective against everyone on Principia's offense except Christine Nacewicz, who put down ten kills with only one error. Kiersten Andersen's poise also helped carried Principia through the tough fight. Principia gave up many points due to unforced errors, but Andersen kept the ball flying with smart play. In the second set, Principia tied Webster 24-24 and earned the lead for game point at 26-25, but barely missed the win with two unforced errors, losing 26-28. Ending scores for the game were 17-25, 26-28, and 18-25.

After losing to Webster 0-3, Principia sharpened up and focused their hits to spread Fontbonne defenders. Kiersten Andersen was most effective with fifteen kills on the outside, while Summer Switzer and Nacewicz  posed as offense threats in the middle and right side. On the backrow, Principia defenders protected their court, frustrating Fontbonne's offense by keeping the ball off the floor with 78 digs. Principia was determined to control the pace of the game with thoughtful serves and hits, causing Fontbonne chaos. Coach Sprague was proud of Principia's controlled mentality through the match. Fontbonne is the second conference team Principia has beaten who was seated higher in pre-season standings. Principia stomped Fontbonne 3-0 with scores 25-16, 25-16, 25-13.

For the day Tara Edwards produced 62 assists, Andersen led defense with 34 digs, and Nacewicz led offense with 17 kills and only two errors. Principia plays next on Tuesday at 5:30p.m. and 8:30 p.m. against MacMurray and Lindenwood University Belleville.
