Principia starts conference with an 8-0 win over Westminster

ELSAH, IL. --  The Principia women's soccer team starts off conference play with an 8-0 win over visiting Westminster.  Seven different women's soccer players scored today to combine for a total of eight goals against the visiting Westminster Blue Jays.   Principia assistant coach Meagan Fleming said she was, “…happy with not only the win, but how the women got their goals.  They played as a team and did a good job at sticking to our game plan.”

In the first half,  Kelly DeWindt scored her first goal of the season, and the first goal of the game in the 11thminute off a pass from Rachel Publicover.  The second goal of the game came in the 15th minute, when senior center back Lauren Wienecke broke through the Blue Jay midfield and slotted a pass to senior Alicia Girbes-Pierce who pushed the ball into the net. Wienecke would then score a header goal in the 37th minute off of a DeWindt corner.  The scoring continued in the 41st minute when Hayley MacWilliams scored a goal after Brie Mayer fought to keep the ball alive in the box.  The fifth and final goal of the half was scored by Dewindt who bent the ball into the back post of the goal off of a corner kick.

Principia continued to execute well in the second half.  Publicover scored a fantastic side volley from 12 yards out off of a Carlie Sanderude cross in the 61st minute.    Ten minutes later in the 71st minute, Publicover would play a through ball to freshman Kenzie Keller that looked like it would be intercepted by the Westminster keeper, but Keller with her unprecedented speed and courage beat the keeper to the ball and found a way to get it into the goal.  Kristen Crandall did well to be in the right place at the right time to score the final goal off of a McWilliams cross in the 80th minute of the game.

Freshman goalie Torie DeNicholas recorded her 3rd full game of the season as well as her first colligate shutout.  The team “lunch pail” was awarded Hayley MacWilliams for her work in the midfield and the “golden boot” was awarded to Publicover for her stellar finish and two assists.

The women's team has a week to train before they play Eureka away on Saturday the 8th .
