In a must win duel at home Principia fought hard but were denied by Fontbonne University with a 2-1 overtime loss on Saturday afternoon in Elsah, IL. The loss ends the season for Principia who finish with a record of 5-10-2.
Despite the scoreline, Principia fought the fight and simply ended up on the wrong side of the coin. Both teams went back and forth early in the half trying to dictate play and it wasn't until the 26th minute that Fontbonne broke through off a corner kick own goal, following an unkind touch by
Colin Angle.
Principia however kept fighting and responded in the 33rd minute when
Alan Cheatham found the net off an
Abi Carper service in the box to level the score.
The second half was a back and forth affair but neither team could put the ball in the net in regulation. In overtime, Principia kept surging searching for the winner. Fontbonne capitalized on the mismatch in the 94th minute with a header to seal the win and finish the season as the second place team. The loss drops Principia to a sixth place finish in the SLIAC.
